Loh Hei, Loh Hei 捞起 aka “Yu Sheng” 捞鱼生

An auspicious dish which is very popular in Malaysia & Singapore is served as part of a MUST-DO event in the festive celebration of the Chinese New Year especially on the 7th day of the Chinese New Year, which falls on the 16th Feb 2013 Saturday. This day is actually known as the “Ren Ri” 人日or a day where it is everyone’s birthday!!

I recalled during my banking days, it is a MUST-DO tradition on every Chinese New Year lunch or dinner with the clients, so imagine me having the same dish 2 times per day per client prior to the days of Chinese New Year and further more with my family on our own celebration, it will be hard to deny all the good luck coming my way haha!!

lohheiThis dish, although is not a Feng Shui to-do item, it is nice and FUN to do it. Just google it, it is a dish prepared with raw carrots, cucumbers, radish – both fresh & seasoned for a nice colour. This dish has followed me everywhere from Tokyo to Hong Kong and even went far far away to Stockholm
& London, everyone loves it!!  Just imagine the tons of well-wishing and auspicious words that comes embodied with every time an item is added to this dish. The whole process of preparing and tossing all the ingredients creates such auspicious energy of abundance that every time we do this, laughter always fills the air!!

Just for fun, I’ve listed some of the ingredients here together with their special meanings as below:

Salmon sashimi/ smoked salmon/ raw fish slices/ or even abalone

To mean abundance of food and wealth and a continuation

Lime Juice or mandarin orange

To mean be prosperous and may prosperity comes in bigger amount!! I like this !!

5 Spice powder

To have a great harvest with the 5 types of grains

Pepper

May every step you take, brings you to levels of higher achievements

Honey/ Plum sauce

Sweet tidings to your family and love ones

Vegetable Oil / Sesame oil

May wealth comes in tons (try to visualize an overflowingof gold into your house…haha)

Crushed peanuts & Sesame seeds

To bring about great expansion of business across the seas

To signify gold that is scattered all over our homes

Finally, pick up your chop-sticks & do a great toss!!
You may also say additional auspicious Chinese New Year greetings and also all your wishes!! Have fun!!
